At OWL, we take your privacy seriously.
This document explains the kind of information 2 Save Energy Limited ("OWL") collects and stores, including Personal Data (information that can be used to uniquely identify, contact, or locate a single person).
OWL pledges to:
- Be open and honest about the Personal Data we collect and how we use it.
- Ask your permission before we share your Personal Data with a third party for purposes other than to provide OWL's services.
- Not share your Personal Data if you don't allow us to.
- Keep your data safe and secure using best-in-class practices such as the use of trusted Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) cryptographic protocol.
OWL operates a general public access website (http://theowl.com) and also a secure, restricted access website for its OWL Intuition customers (https://www.owlintuition.com).
Additionally OWL operates various secure operational servers as part of the OWL Intuition service. These additional servers are not directly accessible by the public.
Data can be collected and processed during your visits to our websites. This can include location data, weblogs, traffic data, and any other communication information. Any forms you fill out on our sites allow us to collect data, such as registering for information or when you complete a purchase. We may also collect information received in direct verbal and written communications with you.
As with many websites, we use tools (including Google analytics) to collect information from visitors in order to better understand how they use our website (e.g., browser type, domains, page views). We use session cookies to keep you logged in while you use features of our web application; these disappear after you close your browser. We also use persistent cookies that stay in your browser and allow us to recognise you when you return to the site. Most Internet browsers automatically accept cookies, but you can change the settings to stop accepting cookies or to prompt you before accepting a cookie from the websites you visit. If you turn off cookies, parts of our website may not work for you.
When you first install OWL Intuition you will need to create an account on our secure servers. This will require a unique username and password of your choice (please choose a strong and safe password). You are responsible for keeping your password confidential. We will never ask you to disclose your password. The first username you set up will be given full administration rights to make any system changes that are permitted by a user. Additional users can be added if required and these sub-users may also be assigned full administration rights or restricted to monitoring and basic system changes.
We will also collect your email address, to be used as our primary means of general communications with you about your OWL Intuition system.
The OWL Intuition system collects and uses:
- Installation and setup information
- Environmental, occupancy and energy usage data
- Technical system data
- Installation and setup information
When you install or upgrade your OWL Intuition system you will be asked several questions in a setup wizard, relating to both your home and the specific monitoring or control equipment being fitted. For example when installing heating & hot water controls, this will include questions like, "How many people live in your household"; "What time does the first person normally get up in the morning"; "Do you normally have showers in the morning?". We will also ask some questions about your property such as, "Do you know the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating for your home?"; "Approximately what year was your property built?". The Postcode for your home is used for various purposes, such as to obtain weather information for your locality in order to assist with optimising heating calculations, and to calculate when sunrise & sunset will be. This information is then used intelligently by our servers to set up and maintain the optimal configuration for OWL Intuition, to best match your lifestyle, taking into account the physical aspects of your home and your preferences.
Environmental, occupancy and energy data
Depending upon which OWL Intuition equipment you have installed and which software applications you use, we will continually sense and collect data such as room temperature, hot water temperature, electricity generation & consumption, gas consumption, water consumption, humidity, ambient light level, carbon monoxide level. This information is recorded by the OWL Intuition servers and used in various ways including a) dynamically controlling connected devices such as boilers and immersion heaters; b) calculating optimal times to turn on or off connected devices; c) optimising OWL Intuition configurations and settings; d) identifying exceptions, unusual and abnormal patterns; e) presenting you with current and historic data via computer and/or smart phone interfaces; f) communicating with you to make suggestions and recommendations on how you might save energy and/or money. This may include the identification and recommendation of third party products or services that OWL has identified as being of specific potential value and relevance to you and your home.
The OWL Intuition system is most effective if it has knowledge of the occupancy patterns of your home. Occupancy status is derived / assumed from the data collected. Additionally, OWL Intuition smart phone applications make use of inbuilt Global Positioning System (GPS) sensors and/or other inbuilt location sensors to ascertain whether you are at home. The only location information communicated from your smart phone to the OWL Intuition servers is whether your smart phone is "at home", "away from home" or at another user defined location such as "at work". No other location data such as coordinate data or position-tracking data is collected or recorded.
Technical system data
We record details of the OWL Intuition equipment and smart phone apps that you have. This includes type, model, serial number, MAC address, software / firmware version, battery charge level. This information is a vital aid should you ever need our help to troubleshoot a problem.
OWL Intuition requires a broadband Internet connection to function as intended. The Network OWL device plugs into your existing broadband Internet router to communicate with our servers. In addition to the data described above, this communication may include your IP address and other routing information obtained from your router. OWL Intuition uses Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) cryptographic protocol for all communications in and out of your router.
We will never share any personally identifiable information or data with a third party for any purpose, without asking you first.
We will use your data in an anonymous form in order that we can obtain quotations and proposals from third parties for products and services that we believe will save you energy or money. Should you subsequently choose to purchase the product or service recommended, you will provide the third party directly with any Personal Data necessary to fulfil that order.
Our Customer Services personnel have qualified access to your information in order that they can answer your questions and, at your request, assist you with your OWL Intuition account settings and configurations.
We may share aggregated and anonymous information in a variety of ways, including publishing trends about energy use and conservation, to help utilities provide demand-response services and to generally improve our system. We will always take precautions to ensure that the information cannot be linked back to you. Additionally, we require our partners receiving such information to keep it in its anonymous form.
We will disclose information to competent law enforcement agencies to the extent required to do so by law, in connection with our legal obligations and/or any legal proceedings or prospective legal proceedings.
If you select a third party for the purchase, installation, or service of your OWL Intuition equipment and share your personal information, we cannot control the collection, storage or sharing of information collected by that party. Please ensure you always check the privacy policies of any company that collects your personal information.
OWL stores your personally identifiable data on its servers for as long as you continue to use your OWL Intuition system. Historic usage may be progressively deleted over time. If you wish to cease using OWL Intuition services and require the deletion of your personally identifiable information, please contact our Customer Services department for further direction. Please note, because of the way we maintain our services, after your personally identifiable information is deleted, backup copies may remain in place for some time before they are deleted.
As with many modern online services, OWL has adopted a commercial model where OWL Intuition services will be provided to consumers without any annual service charges. As part of the OWL Intuition service detailed above, we may contact you from time to time with details of third party products and services that, based upon the knowledge we have collected, are likely to save you energy and/or money. Additionally we may contact you to offer OWL upgrades, new OWL services or to request your participation in market research. There is no obligation on your part to purchase or participate in any of these contacts or offers. However, if you do then OWL may receive a commission or similar payment from a third party provider.
If you would prefer not to receive OWL's offers or other promotional material, then it is possible to transfer from our standard OWL Intuition free service to the OWL Intuition Premium service. The Premium service, annual subscription £28.80 including VAT (as at May 2012), excludes the delivery of any advertising or other promotional material as described above. Please contact our Customer Services department if you wish to transfer to OWL Intuition Premium.
We may update this policy from time to time by posting a new version on our website. You should occasionally check this page to ensure you are happy with any changes. We may also notify you of changes to this policy by email.
